The shops are already in operation and the first results have been “very encouraging”, according to supplier Gebr Heinemann
Travel retailer Kapo Duty Free held the official opening of its new duty-free
stores at Ekaterinburg Koltsovo airport in Russia on June 23.
The retailer
opened a new 650sq m (6,996sq ft) departures shop and an 80sq m (860sq ft)
last-minute outlet in the airport’s international terminal earlier this month,
working closely with supplier Gebr Heinemann area manager Bernard Shlafstein and
German design agency Arno to build the departures shop in time for the first
brIC Summit between Brazil, Russia, India and China, held in the city on June
16. The contract for the new stores runs for seven years.
The new
departures store features more than double the retail space of Kapo’s previous
duty-free shop in the terminal, which has allowed the retailer and Heinemann to
add new brands and products to the selection including Montblanc, Swarovski,
Hugo Boss, Porsche Design and sunglasses, as well as a much wider fragrances and
cosmetics assortment.
Gebr Heinemann sales director Russia, CIS, Baltics
and Mongolia Pierre Viarnaud told DFNIonline: “Ekaterinburg is the third-largest
city in Russia after Moscow and St Petersburg. There is good passenger traffic
at the airport—the number of international passengers is expected to be 450,000
in 2009—but traffic has been hit by the current economic crisis as at every
other airport in Russia and worldwide.
“The region where Ekaterinburg is
located is industrial and very important [economically],” he added. “We are
optimistic about its long-term development. The contract is also a bit longer
than at other locations, which means you are a bit safer when you make the
investment. Sales in the first few days of operation have been very encouraging.
It’s a large shop and that has made it possible to represent all the product
categories well.”
